Introduction

Surveys have always been laborious, cumbersome and time consuming - often involving printing of these bulky questionnaires on paper, and transport the questionnaires to the field and then back. With the era of mobile technologies, the traditional survey processes, often associated with high risks of data loss and time wasting, have become old fashioned and outdated. Smartphones have greatly reduced the burden of traditional survey processes. Whether you’re a seasoned mobile apps user or new to mobile apps such a’2s ODK, this course will allow you to quickly get grips on ODK for both simple and more complex data processes. ODK is well integrated with STATA statistical software, and data collected using mobile phones can be imported into STATA for further management and analysis.

Capturing data in the field usually means using paper. By using an Android smartphone or an Android tablet, field data can be collected with all the advantages that electronic data gathering brings (value input control, skipping irrelevant sections, elimination of transcribing errors from paper, etc.). Data is gathered in situ with the data records stored on the device. Once the surveyor is within range of a WiFi or mobile phone data connection, he/she can send the data to a central server. The course covers relevant STATA techniques, such as: - how to access the data for further management and analysis. The course will introduce participants to basics of STATA software, management of data, conducting of descriptive analysis, graphing and doing simple and complex data tabulations. The statistical software will also enable participants to conduct inferential analysis on their data which includes correlation and regression analyses in order to draw conclusions about a given data set and make relevant inferences as well. Additionally, hypothesis testing that deals with testing whether claims and assumptions made on a particular data set are true before they are used for further analysis will also be conducted.

The goal of this course is to give the participant the whole ability to place all the pieces together required for a mobile data collection system using ODK. Participants should also be able to access the collected data, manage and analyze the data in STATA statistical software for survey reporting purposes.
For whom the course is intended
GOOLEE is offering this important course program for participants who are mainly charged with survey responsibilities and data management and analysis.

Duration

This is a 6 days intensive training program

Course Objectives

  • To enable participants to create X-forms compliant questionnaire using three different applications which will include skip logic, graphical questions, cascading question types, input value control, multiple languages, media and geo-location input.
  • To enable participant to install and manage a central server on the Windows platform to aggregate the data or use one of the free on-line storage services.
  • To enable participants learn how to set the various parameters of the Android application for optimal usage.
  • To be able to undertake elementary data management and statistical analyses in tasks in STATA
  • To have practical knowledge of the key statistical inference concepts of estimation and hypothesis testing

Course Content

  1. Introduction to Surveys
  2. Basics of ODK Mobile
  3. Android phone field data collection and data handling processes
  4. Basics of STATA
  5. Data Management in STATA
  6. Data Analysis in STATA

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of ODK
  • Create a questionnaire form using three different applications
  • Manage the aggregate central server in terms of users, rights, form uploads/downloads, filters and exports
  • Read and modify and/or debug a form in its XML format
  • Download, use and set the parameters of ODK collect for optimal use
  • Incorporate advanced form features such as picture questions, cascading, repeat groups, multilingualism, calculated variables, photo and sound variables, and graphic annotation
  • Geotag forms and visualize them on a map
  • Gain confidence in data management and analysis in STATA
  • Undertake elementary data management and statistical analyses in STATA for project or research data
  • Work independently with STATA in order to produce summary statistics in form of graphs and tables, and perform advanced level regression analysis
