Registration deadline: 02 May 2016
Starting date: 08 May 2016
Ending date: 08 May 2016
This workshop is aimed at equipping managers of teams in international settings with the awareness and the tools to both manage their own stress as well as promote the resilience of their staff. This engaging and interactive course combines cutting edge theories of personal stress and team dynamics with practical exercises to put learning into practice.
The workshop provides an accessible introduction to both cumulative and acute stress, including the latest research on the ways in which stress is registered and encoded in the body. It gives managers the opportunity to reflect on their own stress reactions and explore how they might function in a more resilient way. It also looks at the dynamics of stressed teams and aims to provide managers with the insight and the skills to respond proactively to emotional challenges in their teams.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the key sources of stress in their working environment
- Describe the impact of cumulative and acute stress on both body and mind
- Define the “window of tolerance” with regard to the impact of stress on the autonomic nervous system
- Identify their own primary “red flag” stress reactions
- Develop a personal working definition of resilience and explore the various resources at their disposal to proactively maintain good psychological and physical health.
- Understand the dynamics of stressed and anxious teams and identify problematic group behaviours
- Think honestly about the stress that they themselves may be causing and identify the unproductive “games” they may be playing
- Effectively use active listening and coaching skills to defuse emotional tensions in their team.
- Make use of the principles of Psychological First Aid following critical incidents
- Identify what they may need to ask their organisation for in terms of support
- Draw up a realistic and effective personal resilience action plan.
