Course Description: Migration, whether forced displacement or economic migration of the poorest, is often a major factor in escaping from poverty, persecution and danger, and/or moving into yet more dangerous situations. In search of livelihood and safety, people often become victims of smugglers or traffickers. In this course, students will develop an enhanced awareness and understanding of the complex interaction between migration and humanitarian interventions from the point of view of the migrant, the authorities of the host, be it the national or recipient region or country, and the humanitarian worker. This course is held in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
This course equips aid workers, government officials, military personnel and other professionals with the tools necessary to work effectively in situations involving migrants and refugees. Participants will gain knowledge of the theory and principles of forced migration through a combination of case studies and group exercises.
Cost: There is a course fee of $1,600 and students will earn two credit hours upon completion. Students who choose to take the course for academic credit will earn two credits through Fordham University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
