Registration deadline: 21 Mar 2016
Starting date: 04 Apr 2016
Ending date: 08 Apr 2016

Course Description: Humanitarian action occurs in settings that feature large numbers of different stakeholders: donors, agencies, crisis affected populations, military actors, local and national governments and many others. These different actors come with a wide variety of vested interests, all of which will conflict partially, or absolutely, with the aims of humanitarian actors. Through theoretical lectures and group-based exercises, this five-day Training Course will prepare aid workers for all aspects of negotiation in humanitarian crises, providing students with an understanding of applied negotiation theory and examining a variety of case-studies. The course examines both “negotiations” (including negotiations in situ for access and peace agreements far from the conflict), as well negotiating skills (and the underlying theory of negotiation) that are applicable across a wide variety of more routine negotiations with other actors to allow effective programming: negotiations with donors, host governments and national staff among others.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to describe the framework and fundamentals of negotiation, understand the practical aspects of negotiation, and identify different approaches to negotiating with diverse humanitarian actors and agencies; additionally. Students will refine and enrich their experience of the different techniques of negotiation and be able to assess the culturally specific aspects of negotiation training.

Cost: There is a course fee of $1,600 USD. Students who choose to take the course for academic credit will earn 2 credits through Fordham University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
